Punctured Vacuum Jar

Good day all!
Just wanted to get some insight from everyone as to why the vacuum bell jar at the Bahnson labs experienced puncturing inside and outside during testing of various rigs.
Considering the thickness of the glass, the particles must have been moving at a very rapid rate.
Also, does this imply that if this rig was not contained within a glass jar, that the generated force would have created tremendous force?
