Townsend Browns Lab notebook #1

Paul, I hope you don't mind me starting this new post but I have just spent several minutes playing a game of "concentration" with myself , opening first one topic and then another, losing myself in them a little. So I just said ... I'll open my own door.

The first laboratory notebook fascinates the hell out of me. There are abundant mysteries on the very first page. So I think I will just post myself here and invite others to join me. As Elizabeth said earlier ... jump on into the discussion folks. Being by yourself is no good.

First discussion . I noted that his FIRST comment is about a contract being signed for the "launching gear" of the proposed satelitte.... awarded to Glen Martin ... and the contract for the rocket motor to General Electric.

Lets look at that first. What does he mean by the words "launching gear"? ... of the proposed satellite .... Anybody out there know what satellite he is referring to here?. The year is 1955 ... October if I read it right ... so which "bird" was that?

Didn't Brown one time work for Glen Martin during the war.? I think I read that somewhere. So right off .... there are questions. So I think I will just stay here in "Notebook Number One" As Victoria said earlier in one of her comments .... pouring over his words ... is ... fascinating.

Oh "soteria" ... Now Qualight Systems says that the "family" has control of the remaining notebooks. But he doesn't mention how many of them there are total. If this first one is any indication of their value, I hope the family has the originals in a very safe place. Martin

First of all, if we're talking about 1955, we're still two full years before Sputnik (Oct 4, 1957).

The first U.S. satellite was Explorer 1, launched about four months later (Jan 31, 1958)

But, for reasons that I can't really get into, the satellite that interests me the most is the first operational "spy" satellite, which, I believe, was an "NRL Elint bird" called "GRAB" (for 'Galactic Radiation and Background) and that was secretly launched in June, 1960.

The GRAB was launced atop a "Thor Ablestar" rocket manufactured by Douglas Aircraft.

So, what exactly the references in Brown's notebooks to "Glenn Martin" and "General Electric" are referring to, I'm still unable to deduce, my dear Mr. Watson. Not the first time and surely not the last.

Next clue? Can I buy a vowel?

Martin, welcome to the discussion. Interesting points you both (hi Paul) are making here. Apparently from Browns notes that CONTRACTS had gone out to establish a satellite program ... apparently to GE and Glen Martin, if he was correct in what he was saying. So if those contracts went through they were still behind (and very much surprised) when the Russians launched Sputnik.

What I find fascinating is that Townsend Brown is not known at all for ANY work with satellites. Most people who have "bought "the Moore version of his history (as reflected by the "Philadelphia Experiment)only see him in that light ..... they have no concept of anything different.

Yet we know that in this span of time Brown has a close friendship and valued association with a brilliant mathematician named A.L. (Beau) Kitselman. I am looking forward to finding out more about Beau from conversations with his daughters ... two of whom were kind enough to join us on our "comments section." recently. From them we learned that Beau was involved in missile guidence systems.

Now .... thats interesting! says I .... asking for another vowell from someone else out there ........ maybe this does spell something after all. One word in a story that perhaps has been hidden for a VERY long time. Elizabeth

launching gear for a satellite?

Yeah, this is odd. How would Townsend Brown ... who is not known to be in that field to start with , know about something called "launching gear".

Perhaps General Electric made the rocket engines specifically for Douglas under some subcontracting arrangement. I'll look into that (or any rocket scientists out there want to join us?). But I would wager that ALL of that would have been highly secret.

Maybe Glen Martin was in charge of some sort of "launching gear" ... whatever that might be ... but if that program morphed into something for the NRL ..... our first spy satellite .... you can bet your bottom dollar THAT was classified too.

So, yeah ... its very odd that this scientist leaves such an interesting note ... at the beginning ..... and then he mentions Jessup. and I don't even think that Paul wants to go there ... if it leads right into the Philadelphia story. Martin

"Odd" is pretty much 'de rigeur' around here...

We are making the assumption here that "launching gear" refers to something like a rocket. Is that necessarily a safe assumption?

Not necessarily. Let's look at the quote you are referring to from the first notebook:

from http://soteria.com/journals/journal1.htm

"This brings to mind the statement of M. K. Jessup in "The Case for the UFO" --- 'If the money, thought, time and energy now being poured uselessly into the development of rocket propulsion were invested in a basic study of gravitation, it is altogether likely that we could have effective and economical space travel, at a small fraction of the ultimate cost which we are now incurring, within one decade'."

One wonders if there is a note of irony buried in quoting this particular statement. Is this Brown's way of saying, "gee, if only he knew....." ?

I really don't know how much cred to put into the "black world" theories that there are all kinds of craft flying around the galaxy now based on TTBrown's ideas. That is, after all, why it's called "black world."

no assumptions made, really

Paul .... I hadn't really made any assumptions ... so don't include me in that statement "We are asumming here" ... I hadn't even really thought that it was some sort of "rocket" ... If Brown, who was fine engineer from what I have read about him .... says GEAR ... he means GEAR. If he meant some sort of rocket propulsion (or any kind of propulsion) I think that he would have used the word SYSTEM. No ... now I am assuming .... I assume that when he says GEAR ... he means it.

In my experience with aviation ... a l"aunching gear" might mean some sort of device which would detach the satellite from the main rocket, once up to orbit trajectory. Sort of the thing that might "launch" the unit away from the main rocket.

Second thought. GEAR usually relates to some sort of communication system. Common use for me would be said like "Check the radio gear" Asking others out there. Am I off base here? "Gear" usually means something to do with communications. So there is that possibility.
Any other thoughts out there? Its just interesting to me and I would like to sort of nest down in this topic because I think its important to REALLY READ what the man has actually said. Martin

The martin company was under contract to manufacture a nuclear blast powered "Skunk works" type launching platform and it was done and working a long time before sputnick was ever built. They had several code names and PLUTO was one of them, Orion was another. These Nuclear blast powered lift platforms vare issues NASA had nothing to do with. THESE WERE THE FIRST BLACK PROJECTS.
VonBraun was busy working on liquid fueled system and the public was treated with a good old fashion "Space Race" to watch on TV. Meanwhile on Jackass Flat in Nevada (area 25) Skunk works was already launching Nuclear propelled craft to reach orbits and deliver "something".

There is even a contract award on October 7th 1955 to the Martin company and those records are quite revealing.

following the object with blue haze around it

Hi everybody ... coming back into the discussion and look what a bounty of interesting information! I hardly know where to go first.

It looks like, with the "Chapter" comments opening up I may have to sort of spit my comments and cover both .... well Paul ... you called it a Parallel Universe.

Here is my observation, to start .... Paul ... when you got your first message ... the mystery E mail that started you down the rabbit hole ... it said something truely ODD .....quoting from Chapter 1 ...."So where did all the R&D go? if you go out in the desert about 125 miles SOUTH WEST of Las Vegas you will see an object flying around in the distance with a blusih haze around it. Thats where it went." And then of course your mystery writer mentions the Sharper Image air purifier selling for whatever on late night commercials.

You did such a good job tracking and posting your results about the Sharper Image and Townsend Browns paternity of the same .... what will happen when you begin to tell us about the other half of this scenario? and as far as my comment on SOUTHWEST OF VEGAS I think I will put that on the Chapter One section. Meet you guys over there .... and anybody else out there who wants to jump into this pool. We are a little bit like fish arn't we, jumping from one pond pool to the next. Elizabeth

Hey guys ... the jumping from one pond was great ... fish should jump like that .... they see things they ordinarily wouldn't (as another reader suggested earlier) but THIS fish just jumped into the wrong pool .... the discussion I want to jump into is .... "Preface ... Down the Rabbit Hole...."
So tail fin going like mad .... building up speed .... heading for the surface! Meet you on the other side .... Elizabeth
